Key summary

Offworld Industries announced on October 15 that its military shooter Squad is coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, with a free PS5 alpha preview running from October 16 to October 25 for players who sign up. At launch the console version offers four modes, six maps and eight factions, PvP matches of up to 100 players, opt-in crossplay between PlayStation and Xbox, and console-ruleset community servers that PC players can join. Offworld says it will share the exact launch date closer to release; console copies are digital-only and sold separately from the PC game, with no cross-progression and no mouse-and-keyboard support.

Squad is leaving PC exclusivity behind. In an announcement and FAQ posted on October 15, Offworld Industries said its team-based military shooter is coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, with help from its partners at Secret Mode.

PS5 owners get the first look. A free alpha preview runs from Friday, October 16 through Sunday, October 25, and anyone can take part after enlisting through the sign-up page linked in the post, which Offworld also shared on Steam. The test drops players into Gorodok, where the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the People’s Liberation Army fight for control of a strategic rail line.

To mark the test, Offworld is also giving every Squad owner on Steam the Recon Team Pack for free until October 25, a set of five woodland-camo weapon skins for the USMC faction.

What the console version includes at launch

  • Modes: AAS, RAAS, Invasion and Fireteam.
  • Maps: Al Basrah, Fallujah, Mutaha, Narva, Yehorivka and Gorodok.
  • Factions: United States Army, United States Marine Corps, People’s Liberation Army, Armed Forces of Ukraine, Private Military Contractors, Middle Eastern Insurgents, Russian Ground Forces and British Armed Forces.
  • Player counts: PvP matches hold up to 100 players; the Fireteam PvE mode is for five.

Offworld says more content will follow after launch, built on a shared roadmap for PC and console it calls “One Squad.”

Crossplay, servers and controls

PlayStation and Xbox players can team up through optional crossplay on official console servers. Play with PC is limited to community servers that PC players host using the console ruleset; these sit in a separate section of the PC server browser, and console players who switch crossplay on can join them.

Console players will also be able to browse servers and run their own, and Offworld plans official dedicated servers in North America, South America, Europe, Asia and Oceania. Local voice chat carries over.

The controls were redesigned for gamepads rather than mapped one-to-one from PC. Mouse and keyboard will not be supported, but aim assist will; Offworld says the gunplay itself is otherwise unchanged.

Performance targets

Offworld’s current targets (it says final performance details will come closer to release, once testing is done):

Console Resolution (dynamic upscaling) Frame rate
PlayStation 5 4K 60 fps
Xbox Series X 4K 60 fps
Xbox Series S 1440p 30 fps

There will be no separate performance and quality modes.

Buying and owning it

The console edition is digital-only. A PC copy does not unlock it, PlayStation and Xbox purchases are separate, and progress does not carry between platforms. DLC is tied to the platform it was bought on, and cosmetics stay on their own platform. Console players will not get mod support when the game launches. Offworld says it has nothing to share yet about Game Pass or PlayStation Plus.

What happens to PC

Once the console version is out, Offworld says updates will ship on the same day on every platform unless a fix concerns only one of them. It also says work on the console port, together with the game’s move to Unreal Engine 5, has fed engine and tooling improvements that PC players should benefit from as well.

As for timing, Offworld says it will reveal the exact console launch date as release gets closer, together with a fuller look at the controls, interface and console gameplay, and that a beta may follow the alpha.
