Key summary

Phoenix Cyclops, the first character in the Year 1 pass for Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls, arrives on November 2 alongside his Classic and Legacy costumes. The game's official X account has confirmed the rest of the year: Thor (Jane Foster) in winter 2027, Venom in spring 2027 and Jubilee in summer 2027. The full first-year DLC lineup for Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls is now public. On October 11 (UTC), the game’s official X account listed four fighters for the Year 1 pass, opening with Phoenix Cyclops on November 2. Arc System Works had already detailed that first character in a PlayStation.Blog post by producer Takeshi Yamanaka on October 7.

The Year 1 schedule

  • Phoenix Cyclops: November 2, 2026
  • Thor (Jane Foster): winter 2027
  • Venom: spring 2027
  • Jubilee: summer 2027

The teaser art for the upcoming fighters was made with artist Peach Momoko, who drew her own versions of their in-game designs. In a separate post, the team introduced Jane Foster’s Thor and named Keiichi Okabe (@MONACA_okabe) as the game’s first guest composer, writing her theme.

On Steam, the Year 1 Characters and Stage Pass is described as four extra characters, one extra stage and a set of result-screen poses. The poses unlock right away, while the rest is expected by December 31, 2027. The store page lists Arc System Works as developer and PlayStation Publishing LLC as publisher.

How Phoenix Cyclops plays

Yamanaka describes Cyclops, voiced by Ray Chase, as an all-rounder. His many Optic Blast variations cover both long range and close quarters, and the Phoenix Force adds fire attacks that cover a large part of the screen, on top of projectiles, rushes, throws and setup tools.

  • Firing Optic Blasts builds up Phoenix Force energy in the form of Solar Shards.
  • With four Solar Shards stored, Cyclops can transform into Dark Phoenix for a strong but temporary power spike.
  • The transformation carries risks, including a drain on his health.

The mechanic draws on the Avengers vs. X-Men comics, in which Cyclops was one of the Phoenix Five and ended up absorbing his teammates’ power to become Dark Phoenix.

Why the Phoenix version

Yamanaka wrote that Cyclops was an early favourite for the Unbreakable X-Men team, but his look and moveset are so well known from past Marvel fighters that the studio wanted a different angle. The narrative team proposed the Phoenix take, and the developers chose to keep working on him until he felt new, which is why he arrives after launch as DLC rather than in the base roster. He is also drawn a little younger than usual, to set his inner conflict against the Phoenix Force’s aura.

Because the base design departs from the classic look, Cyclops’ “Classic” and “Legacy” costumes go on sale the same day he does. Yamanaka said the studio plans classic-style costumes whenever it reworks a character heavily or picks a less common version.

Trial and sale

Alongside the October 7 post, the game’s first PlayStation Store sale began, with the Ultimate Edition discounted, and PlayStation Plus members got a three-hour Game Trial. Visitors to EVO France, held October 9-11, could also play Phoenix Cyclops at the game’s booth.

What we don’t know yet

The official posts give only seasons for Thor, Venom and Jubilee, not release dates. Neither the blog nor the X posts list prices, and the blog post does not say when the PlayStation Store sale ends.
